Charities spend a great deal of time and energy focusing on audits from the Charities Directorate. While this attention on the Directorate is justifiable it is important to recognize that charity regulation is only one function of the Canada Revenue Agency (the “CRA”) and that charities are answerable to the CRA for many of its activities.

Tick Tock: It’s time to continue under the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act

According to data obtained from Corporations Canada, as of September 1st, only 1,663 out of approximately 25,000 corporations have made the corporate changeover to the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act . Recognizing that many of these corporations are inactive, that still leaves thousands of corporations to continue by the October 17, 2014 deadline.

Lobbying is one form of advocacy, and refers to a paid person communicating with government employees or politicians in order to influence a government decision, legislation, policy or programs. Lobbying can be in the form of face-to-face communication, phone calls, faxes, emails, letters, or any other form of communication.
